Wolverhampton 31 vs Whitchurch 30

Whitchurch 1st XV v Wolverhampton 1st XV

This week the first team were away at Wolverhampton, heading into the game both teams were on equal points inth league with Whitchurch ahead in the table on points difference. Early on in the game Whitchurch had a penalty in front of the posts which was followed with a successful conversion by Danny Nicholas for 3 points. A couple of minutes later a kick through from the Wolverhampton centre resulted in a yellow card for Whitchurch as they were penalised trying to stop a Wolverhampton try and a penalty try was awarded to Wolverhampton. As the half went on Wolverhampton intercepted a pass and went on to score this was followed up by another try form pick and go. Whitchurch retaliated with some try’s of their own through the forwards as they started to control the game well in the later stages of the half. The half ended with Wolverhampton having two players in the sin bin with the score 21: 18.

As the second half started Whitchurch continued to control the game well and capitalised on Wolverhampton being down to thirteen men with some further trys. Once back up to full strength Wolverhampton scored a couple of trys of their own. In the final 25 minutes Whitchurch defended in their own 22 and ended up with 3 of their players in the sin bin at the same time for some high tackling. Unfortunately, Whitchurch were not able to come back from the strong defensive display on the latter stages of the game despite getting themselves up to Wolverhampton’s own 22-meter line before the referee blew the final whistle. The score ended 31-30 to Wolverhampton. The new head coach Max Pridmore said that the team played well and fought well to come back from 20 points behind but due to the referee's strict interpretation of the rules struggled to get the win. Next week the 1st XV are at home to Crewe and Nantwich kick off at 2:15 pm all support welcome.
