Liverpool St Helens 23 vs Whitchurch 17
This was a result that left the Shropshire men more angry than upset. They had come to the once mighty Liverpool expecting to repeat their comfortable win at home earlier this season but soon found conditions sgsinst them. An early injury to Captain Jimmy Hockenhull set them back and the Scousers were able to scramble over a try after eight minutes. Whitchurch hit straught back with ever increasing pressure which resulted in a try for Jimmy Bebbington, converted by Robbie Leighton. a Penalty for the Merseysiders put them a point ahead just before half time and the heavens really opened.
A second half try by Nathan Horton put the visitors ahead again but this was cancelled out when Liverpool scored again desite having a man in the sin bin for repeated high tackles. Another Bebbington try from a trademark catch and drive put Whitchurch ahead again by four points but a Liverpool penalty draw them within a point. The reds thought they had won the game as the minutes passed the eighty minutes but a series of perplexing decisions put Liverpool back close to the line and, in the eighty sixth minute of play, the home side scrambled across the line to win. To say that coach Jordan Davies was unhappy is an understatement.
