Kirby Lonsdale vs Whitchurch

Whitchurch got their first away win of the season on Saturday after a gruelling three and a half hour drive up the congested M6 on Saturday. The reds started off slowly and were 7 points down within the first 4 minutes due to a defensive mix up. This woke them up and after constant pressure on the Kirby defence a penalty try was awarded after a string of penalties by the Kirby forwards. The Whitchurch forwards dominated the game and put relentless pressure on the Kirby defence but it was the home team that scored next after some good running and passing by their youthful backs to score a try that was converted. Whitchurch then defended well until half time going in 14: 7 down.

After the break the Whitchurch forwards showed their dominance again with a good pushover try by the forwards touched down by Tom Hale which was converted by Robbie Leighton to bring the scores level. Whitchurch then gave away a penalty letting Kirby back into the game which they converted to take a 3 point lead. Half way through the half though Whitchurch were awarded a scrum which they drove over the whitewash with Nathan Horton touching down which was converted for maximum points by Robbie Leighton again. Whitchurch had chances to increase the lead with a missed kickable penalty but the points were secured with 5 minutes to go with another Robbie Leighton penalty to make the score 17:24. Kirby were not finished though and put plenty of pressure on the Whitchurch defence who tackled superbly and Kirby thought they had scored in the last minute but a forward pass was awarded.

This team is now playing some good rugby, and this was an excellent result against a team who at the start of the game was on the same points in the league. This has now taken the Edgeley Park men into 5th. position in the league having played all the teams above them.

The second team game was postponed due to Spartans not being able to field a team. There is a free weekend next week for all teams to enjoy the world cup final and the team will be at home again on 4th. November against Liverpool St. Helens and as much support as possible would be greatly appreciated.
